Media Thursday

NBC has dumped Bob Costas from next week's Super Bowl coverage.  The tabloids speculate Costas is paying the price for his comments on football and concussions.  Costas had already announced plans to scale back his duties.  He's being a good soldier, saying he didn't cover the NFL much this year and it would be unfair to parachute in and take over.  While I partially feel that's a good policy, Costas is the face of NBC Sports, and that's a lousy way to treat a long time employee.

In my view, Bob Costas kicked up the sanctimony factor in recent years, but he is still as skilled as they come.  It's a joy to watch and listen to him do baseball games on MLB Network, especially when teamed with someone sharp like Jim Kaat and John Smoltz.

Don Imus announced Monday that he's retiring at the end of March.  Imus intended to quit in December, but the bankruptcy of parent company Cumulus moved up the timetable.

The Imus glory days were fantastic.  Those WNBC broadcasts were biting, sharp, witty, and wildly funny.  Plus his dj mechanics were outstanding.   I admired how Imus was able to reinvent himself from dj to politically oriented talk show host.

You knew there was a "but" coming...

In recent years, it was a mumbling, bitter, surly, mean Imus that came through the radio speakers.  He was syndicated, and it picking up Imus in the Morning was a sign a station was on its last legs and out of ideas.

Imus will go down in history as one of radio's greats, but he should have stepped aside much sooner.

At this point, it appears FOX is the top bidder for Thursday Night Football.  No complaints.  I generally like the way FOX Sports does things, even though the Sunday football show has become increasingly silly.
