#Sad X 3

Is there anything more sad than a closed school?

Below is the front of the Bancroft School on Albright Avenue in Scranton.  The school district closed it this year.  It's old and needs a lot of repairs.  Plus, the school district is broke.  Students now attend class at an elementary school, a relatively new one, a couple of miles away.

It's water under the bridge, but it's also sad how the school was allowed to deteriorate over the years.  This shouldn't have happened and a neighborhood las lost part of its soul.

The view from the back is below.

Developers have repurposed schools in Scranton and the surrounding area over the years.  This neighborhood has a lot going for it.  It's close and convenient to everything.  The Scranton Lace redevelopment project is only a few blocks away, and that will be spectacular if it ever takes off.

I look forward to #Happy.

And, speaking of sad, Alan Kalter died.  He was David Letterman's announcer for 20 years.  Before that, Kalter announced a raft of game shows, including "To Tell the Truth" and the early Pyramid episodes.  Great voice, great delivery.  He had one of those live, electric voices, a lot like the best ever-- Johnny Olsen.

Alan Kalter was 78.

And one more item.  Steve Carlin died this week at the age of 85.  He was a director and audio operator at WNEP for 40 years.  That's almost unheard of.  40 years at the same place.  I am always in awe of the men and women who helped build WNEP, and Steve is certainly on that list.  My sympathy to his friends, his family, his former coworkers and the thousands of viewers who benefitted from Steve's work.
